Miscellaneous Photos
The photographs below show some of the vacated buildings and abandoned operations that littered the
mall's periphery in the early 2000s. Once thriving places of activity, their skeletal remains contributed to
the eyesore that the Lakehurst property had become by the 21st century. Despite the ghost town
atmosphere, a few establishments managed to survive.
Above left is Service Merchandise, a catalog
showroom retailer, which opened on the west
end of the Lakehurst property in 1981.
Fun Harbor family amusement center, above
right, provided entertainment throughout the
1990s, featuring many activities including
go-carts, miniature golf, and arcade games.
At right is the former Child World building on the
south side of the property.
The Lakehurst cinema opened with 3 screens in 1974, and expanded to 5 screens in 1984. By 2004, it
featured 12 screens. The cinema was closed in 2000 and reopened in 2002.
The residential portion of Lakehurst, added in the mid-1970s, no longer bears the Lakehurst name. The
apartment complex has been renamed "The Lakes at Fountain Square."
