It is such a shame that all of Lakehurst had to be destroyed. Carson, Pirie, Scott was doing well. From all that I talked to,
Carson's was a very important place to shop . . . the ONLY place in Waukegan to shop. We could run out there on our lunch hour
or on the way home from work! Carsons could have remained, and the new areas built around it. Now we have no where in
Waukegan to shop. That is a big loss for Waukegan. We have to go elsewhere. I prefer Hawthorne shopping center, but it is so
far away. Gurnee Mills was never competition, unlike what so many others have said, because the type and quality of
merchandise are nothing alike. Gurnee Mills is not worth going to for shopping. Okay, I've said my piece. I'm very unhappy with
Waukegan's city "leaders" who could have kept Carsons.

My daughters were in grammar school when the Mall opened - an exciting step up from Belvidere Mall, also wonderful in its early
days... We could always find what we wanted at Lakehurst. Even after Hawthorne was built, we'd shop both, but most often buy
at Lakehurst. The JC Penney store was our most purchased from, ever, anywhere. The mall was big enough to have a great
variety of stores to spend several hours and even have a good meal - but small enough to be able to go back to stores after
"shopping" for an item, and find the store as well as the item! Not so at bigger malls, and forget it at Gurnee Mills. And if you got
sepaarated from your people, you could always re-find each other. Christmas was always so beautiful because of the grand
open center area. Unlike malls with multiple corridors, you could hang over the balcony and see each years great tree and
holiday setups. It was a great hang out place for the boys in blue (or whites) from Great Lakes, and ! a safe place for your kids to
meet and go off on their own as they were "growing up". We all absolutely loved this mall and, yes, I do miss it.

If only we knew what we had, we never would had strayed to other malls. The best mall in the immediate vicinity was Lakehurst
Mall. The market reps knew exactly what was needed in the stores, unlike the over inflated no taste clothing lines of Hawthorne
and Gurnee Mills. Oh Gurnee Mills where each item must be carefully observed for flaws and for the price you pay... I don't get it
nor do I buy there. Hawthorne buys for their market the young and elderly, their market doesn't impress me. I miss Lakehurst, it
was just the right size with the right markets for everyone, whether rich, poor, or middle-class.

This site is great. Can't believe all the memories that came flooding back after seeing this site for the first time. Lakehurst was
the perfect mall - not too big, not too small. It was a mall for all.

I think the most important memory for me was that my daughter had her wedding day pictures taken at the J.C. Penney there.
She and my granddaughter are now deceased, but that is one of the most important memories. Also, my girlfriends and I had
the song, "Wiebolts wobble, but they don't fall down". The old childhood toy, whose byline said that said "webbles wobble but
they don't fall down." Just hanging out there with friends and shopping in a little more gentle time. The pretzel stand at the top of
the s.w. escalator, so many memories. Thanks Lakehurst.

In October of 1981 I met the man that I would marry and still be happily married to for more than 23 years....I worked at Jean
Nicole and met him through a co-worker. It started like this, after meeting him a few months prior through a co-worker he
happened to walk past Jean Nicole one day in October with a friend. We started talking and before you knew it - I decided he
was "THE ONE". I called him and asked him out and and two years later we were married. We now have to grown sons and still
are as much in love (if not more) than the day we were married in 1983. Lakehurst Mall will always have a special place in both
of our hearts.

As a teenager my friends and I would walk from Glen Rock in Waukegan meet other friends and hang out. I remember in the
early 1970's my now husband and I with other friends, going to Peddlers and having a sandwich, a beverage and people
watching. The store front was open, right at the up escalator. We had some good times there.

I was mistaken in the last memory that I sent via this site. My husband corrected me and the name of the store was Slicers!

Lakehurst was "THE PLACE", to shop, to hang, and to work ! It had it all. It almost closed the Belvidere Mall, the previous place
to hang.. Remember Tally's Pub ?? I think it was the first place to buy liquor in the mall. Can't forget that !Although we can't
remember the name of the place at the top of "up" escalator. Probably spent to much there ! Sorry to see it go..

I grew up on Thorndale, just down Greenleaf, from Lakehurst Mall. I grew up there!!! I was only a 10 minute walk from there and
spent all of my free time there. I am gonna miss that place, I was so sad to see it go!

Who could forget about the "Over 18" section in the Joker's Wild store on the 2nd floor? Also, the BEST destination for
thepsychadelic 70's- Helen Galagher on the 2nd floor- where you could get a pot pipe, blacklight posters and infinity mirrors! I
LOVED that store! Thanks for your work on this site- great memories! Please add the above two shops- unforgettable!

This site is awesome. Scotty the talking Christmas Tree at Carsons! The Piercing Pagoda is where my innocent peircings
started! Karmelkorn! Orange Julius! Everything was shiny at Lakehurst. Remember outside the mall- Mr. Steak the resturant?
LOVED THAT PLACE! I have the fondest memories of getting dropped off at the mall, with my best friend Amy and going to the
top floor of Carsons where they had HUGE discounts and buying matching outfits to wear to Woodland Junior High!

I have lot's of memories from the mall. I remember my mom or one of my girlfriends moms driving us to the mall and we would
hang out all day. Then go to the movies. When i got in my teens, we would go to the mall to meet guy's, and the sailers. It was so
safe there, are parents had no worries. Also that i had an aunt that sat in the security room and watched all the cameras in the
mall, i really enjoyed going into that room and seeing the people and watching for shoplifters. My favorite restaurants were
athens gyros, orange julius, and fannie may candies. Christmas was so very special to me because of the mall. The memories I
have could go on forever.
