What a great website!  I was a student at "Wiebolt U" as it was affectionately termed by the students of the Gurnee School
district back in 1986 when downtown Gurnee flooded. I also was a "model" at the mall with my sister and brother.  I have many
fond memories of the mall and wish that the area hadn't changed so much.  (or maybe we both changed)  I would be overjoyed
to see that land used in a way that would benefit the community.  I was heartbroken when the possibility for a casino was
mentioned..

I love this website! Thank you for doing this.I sent the link to all my friends from Waukegan... I practically grew up at Lakehurst.
My husband and I used to spend our dating days there, getting a Hot Sam pretzel w/ cream cheese, throwing quarters away at
Aladdins' Castle, laughing at the products in Jokers Wild. (The Spencers' of it's day),buying pins/posters at The Giving Tree...
That was the way to spend an afternoon! Then we would meet friends at the Cinema or go bowling. Sometimes we would go to
the midnight show of "Rocky Horror" then hit Dennys' for a late snack. Many fond memories of "my" mall. Gurnee Mills is ok, but
it's no Lakehurst...

I think I was their the first night it opened. We used to go to Randhurst and I was so happy a mall like Lakehurst was here. I was
in my eary 20's when it opened and it was a sparkling place to be. I loved Wieboldts. They had a section of wigs which were so
fun to try on. Another favorite was Betty's of Winnetka and Chas A. Stevens. Stevens had a sale room in the back which was so
fun to check for bargains. It is so crazy, but when I pass by there now it really saddens me.

Thanks so much for putting this website together. Lakehurst was such a big part of my teenage years and adulthood, and I
thought I was alone in how much I miss it! I only wish you had more pictures of when it was thriving. It was THE only place to shop
for me! I was there from opening day to the closing of Carson's and have many wonderful memories of the Mall. I work at
Cardinal Health next door and it was torture watching the demolition. It was as if a part of me was taken away. What a wonderful
tribute!

I remember Hot Sams Pretzels, My cheerleading competition, Orange Julias, and being able to walk around the mall for hours
without having to turn around because I reached an end. My favorite stores were Deb, Causual Corner, and JC Penny. But most
of all, I miss Hot Sams- they had the best soft pretzels, and I have yet to find one that compares.

What I remember.... The days parents didn't have to worry and would drop us kids off at the mall in the morning and pick us up in
the late afternoon. The days when we could walk over to see a movie with no worries about being taken. Santa was a big hit
when we were little. Visiting our friends working in the mall as a bigger hit when we were older. Shopping all day but what we
were really doing was building memories with our most treasured friends.

I vividly remember christmas time in the mid 80s...taking a trip w/ all my aunts and cousins to Lakehurst - walking past the
throngs of people that were doing their christmas shopping, eating pizza at Ponos Pizza...(or Pogos maybe?) then taking the
long anticipated walk to Circus World....truly unforgettable.

I worked at Joker's Wild for 10 years as a regional manager for the family owned chain. There were 5 stores throughout IL & WI.
We occupied a space at the "dead" end of the Lakehurst Mall on the lower level next to Orange Julius. The inventory included
novelties, magic, posters, incense, adult gags, and many seasonal gifts, the largest part of which was Halloween merchandise.
The mall management was in a love-hate relationship with J.W... they loved collecting rent, but hated our products and
customers, especially when J.W. decided to start selling head gear like bongs, rolling papers, and marijuana pipes which were
eventually displayed with cut tobacco and sold as "tobacco" pipes! It was a fun time in my life, having just graduated from
college and the job gave me a lot of experience dealing with employees, and customers alike. I'm sorry to hear the mall has
been demolished!

I remember going to the Grand Opening of Lakehurst because my grandmother worked at Lytton's selling coats. I also
remember going to see Scottie the talking Christmas tree at Carson's. Years later I worked at Carson's and got to meet the lady
who played Scottie. She still worked at Carson's, but was now a store manager. I miss Carsons!
